 Quinte Launches Community Adjustment Centrenew - neon

United Way of Quinte recently announced it will launch a community-wide labour adjustment centre with support from the Trillium Foundation.  The centre will be coordinated by labour programs and services staff, who spear-headed this project.  Click here to read more.

At left:  Kelly Harrington, President, Saskatoon & District Labour Council, and Josh Pion, Vice-Chair, United Way of Saskatoon & Area Board of Directors cut a cake celebrating the 15th Anniversary of the formal partnership between both organizations.

 

2010 - Saskatoon - LC Partnership Award

United Steel Workers Locals 7458, 7689, 189 and their employer PCS received the Saskatoon & District Labour Council Partnership Award for 2009. This Award recognizes the importance of a Union/Management partnership in the success of a workplace campaign. The recipients of the 2009 Award have worked collectively at their three Potash Corp mine sites (Cory, Allan and Patience Lake), showing strong leadership from union and management. Through workplace presentations to employees, special events and the coveted parking spots, United Steel Workers and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan added fun to their campaigns, with every individual donation matched 100% by PCS.  This campaign has continued to grow, with this generous group raising its largest amount yet in 2009, with over $365,000!  At left are:  Gord Hiebert (USW 7458), Ron St. Pierre (USW 7589) and Kelly Harrington, President, Saskatoon & District Labour Council.

 
Op Ed Recognizing Workers

In late December 2009, UWC-CC circulated an opinion piece to newspapers in larger communities underlining the generosity and commitment to their communities shown by working people - in good and tough economic times!  As of January 6, the Toronto Sun, Hamilton Spectator, London Free Press and Halifax Chronicle Herald have picked it up.  Click here to read it.

 NEW PARTNERSHIP TOOL - Model Picket Line Policy for United Ways - Centraides

A new tool has been added to the Toolkit and circulated to United Ways - Centraides and Labour Councils.  It provides a best practices approach to assist United Ways - Centraides where they might encounter a labour dispute that could affect campaign or other business.  Click here to read it.

 
Speech by Michelle Laurie at the UWLM Labour Appreciation Dinner


Michelle Laurie is the President of IBEW 258, the Past Board chair UWLM, and a Labour rep on United Way of Canada – Centraide Canada and United Way of Lower Mainland Boards of Directors.  Her inspirational speech based on a quote from the author of The Little Prince can lead us all to more thoughtful ways of mobilizing collective action.  Click here to read it.

2009 Sudbury Breakfast

Another successful Labour Breakfast was held in Sudbury in early November. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (Union of Taxation Employees) 042 donated a generous $1 per member to the campaign. 2009 Victoria LC cheque

The Victoria Labour Council donated $2,500.00 to the United Way of Greater Victoria.  The cheque was presented by Mike Eso, Labour Council President and member of the 2009 UWGV Campaign Cabinet, and Stan Dzbik, Labour Council Member-at-Large, to Pat de Jong UWGV Labour Coordinator. 

 

 

  Hamilton

What happens when there's a picket line surrounding a major workplace campaign?  The United Way of Burlington and Greater Hamilton chose not to cross the line.  The union, CUPE, contacted United Way to thank them for their respect and to work with them to ensure the campaign achieves its goal.  Read the letter from CUPE Local 3906 to Miriam Gracey, UW's Campaign Manager, and Bob Sutton, UW's Coordinator Labour Community Services.
