Partnership Toolkit
In 1999, representatives of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) and the United Way – Centraide (UW-C) Movement met to review the status of Labour partnership, which was established through the 1988 joint Statement of Principles. A key recommendation of the review was the development of tools to assist local Labour Councils and United Ways-Centraides (UWs-Cs) create, develop and strengthen their partnership and work together.
This toolkit provides ideas and tools drawn from a variety of discussions and recommendations over the years, and from what we've learned about our two movements working together. Note that these tools provide basic information that applies to most situations, however, there will be situations where the parties may have to modify the tool to meet the objective. In some cases, local partnerships are far beyond what's offered here, in other cases local partners have structured the relationship somewhat differently.
These differences are expected and welcomed. The one common element required from all parties is the development of strong partnerships based on good faith.

How to Use this Toolkit
The Introductory Document provides a general overview and discussion of the partnership. This is the section to read from beginning to end.
Appendices 1 (Tools) include a variety of tools designed to support partnerships at various levels of development. While eventually all tools may be useful, this group of documents is a resource to draw from as required or desired, and to apply to the partnership.
Appendices 2 (Backgrounders) include documents relevant to the partnership. This is a resource to provide you with further information about the basis of the partnership and each partner. Again, draw on these as necessary.
